Meet the President, Mick Hannigan

When and how did you join Kilkenny RFC?

I moved to Kilkenny in November 1999 for a job at Glanbia. There were a good few people working in Ballyragget who had played with the club in the past. Brendan McIntyre Snr and Noel O’Brien pointed me in the right direction and I played with Kilkenny for the second half of the season finishing it off with a win in the first’s plate. Due to study factors I moved away from Kilkenny and played with Naas for the next two seasons.

I returned in September 2002 and got back into Kilkenny RFC thanks to Paddy ‘The Red’ McDonald. This was during a very successful period for the club with the firsts winning 2 Towns Cups and 2 Leinster Leagues and the seconds winning 4 Towns Cups and 2 Leinster Leagues between 2001 and 2005. I was part of a front row of Paul Mullally and Paul Hanrahan that won three seconds Town’s Cups in a row. I went onto play or at least tog out up until 2017 when my career was cut short by injury.

What is your favourite part of being a member of Kilkenny RFC?

What I love most about being a part of Kilkenny RFC is the people. I witness at firsthand the dedication of volunteers who give their time to grow the game and help run the club. I am very grateful for the work they do every week.

What are your ambitions for the coming season?

I hope that our Men’s and Women’s teams are in contention for promotion at the business end of the season. I wish Corey and Paddy, their coaching teams and players the best for the upcoming season.

I hope that we will see the positive impact of the Youth’s coaching structures for boys and girls in player development, retention and success on the pitch.

I want to ensure that all minis players develop their skills in an environment that ensures that they want to come out to play rugby every week and that we end the season with more players than we started.
