Free Cardiac Screening for Kilkenny Rugby Club Players (Ages 12–18)
Kilkenny Rugby Club, in partnership with the Dillon Quirke Foundation, is delighted to offer free cardiac screening for our youth players aged 12 to 18 years.
📅 Date: Tuesday 21st July
📍 Venue: Kilkenny RFC
⏰ Time: TBC
Places are limited, and advance registration is essential. Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis based on completed applications. Applicants must be members of Kilkenny RFC. We will confirm when the registration link goes live.
While the screening is provided completely free of charge, voluntary donations of any amount on the day are greatly appreciated. As a registered charity, the Dillon Quirke Foundation relies on community support to continue providing this lifesaving service to young people across Ireland.
About the Dillon Quirke Foundation
The Dillon Quirke Foundation was established in memory of Dillon Quirke, who tragically passed away after collapsing during a hurling match on 5th August 2022 due to Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS).
Founded by Dillon’s family, the charity’s mission is to provide widespread cardiac screening for young people aged 12–18 involved in sport, helping to identify underlying heart conditions before they become life-threatening.
Each year, approximately 100 young people in Ireland lose their lives to Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS). Through cardiac screening, the Foundation aims to raise awareness, detect hidden heart conditions, and ultimately save lives.
The screening programme is delivered by Advanced Medical Services (AMS) and has already helped thousands of young athletes across Ireland.
What Does the Screening Involve?
The screening process is simple, non-invasive, and parents or guardians are welcome to accompany participants throughout.
The appointment includes:
• A personal and family medical history questionnaire.
• A physical examination by a medical doctor.
• A 12-lead Electrocardiogram (ECG).
• Review of all results by a Consultant Cardiologist.
Participants will receive their results by email within approximately 10 working days.
Should any abnormality be detected, AMS will contact the participant’s parent/guardian directly and provide the results to both the family and their nominated GP, ensuring any necessary follow-up care can begin promptly.
Why Cardiac Screening Matters
Young athletes can have underlying heart conditions without showing any symptoms.
Leading organisations including the European Society of Cardiology, the International Olympic Committee, and World Rugby recommend regular cardiac screening for young people participating in competitive sport.
Evidence from countries where routine screening has been introduced shows a significant reduction in deaths from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome.
By taking part, you are helping to protect the health and wellbeing of our young players.
Cost
The screening is completely free, thanks to funding provided by the Dillon Quirke Foundation.
As the Foundation receives no government funding, voluntary donations are welcomed to help continue delivering this vital programme to sports clubs across Ireland.
Every donation, regardless of size, helps make future screenings possible.
