Kilkenny U16 Girls 07-36 Gorey U16 Girls – South East League
Kilkenny U16 girls faced Gorey at home on Saturday, with the privilege of playing on the No.1 pitch, which was in pristine condition. The game started with Gorey’s larger pack dominating the opening 10 minutes, but Kilkenny held their ground, showing resilience in the rucks and mauls. Despite Kilkenny’s solid defense, Gorey managed to score the first try.
Once the Kilkenny girls settled into the game, they gained control with effective set pieces and impressive work at the breakdown. Their defense, particularly in the tackles, was strong, with several turnovers keeping Gorey in check. Ellie Millie stood out, providing key tackles in the backline to prevent further advances. Although Gorey managed two breakaway tries, they were very much against the run of play.
Kilkenny’s dominance was clear during a well-executed scrum, which set up an attack deep in Gorey’s territory. Rebecca Hogan sent Isabell Carroll through a gap, her powerful run bringing play into Gorey’s 22. The forwards, led by notable efforts from Aoibhin McGuinness and Ali Dowling, provided excellent support at the rucks, keeping Kilkenny in Gorey’s half. Captain Leah Dooley was unlucky to be held up over the try line after a strong drive. The half ended with Kilkenny pressuring Gorey, as Erica Brennan made a break on the left wing, supported by Aoife Ryan, who was forced into touch just before the referee blew for halftime.
The second half saw a more even contest, but Gorey extended their lead with another try. Kilkenny responded by stepping up their intensity in the rucks and tackles, putting in a strong defensive effort. Kilkenny’s set piece play also improved, with near steals in the lineout. After halting another Gorey attack, Nessa Teehan secured a crucial turnover and broke through, sending Sophia Macken on a dazzling 40-meter run for Kilkenny’s first try, which was converted by Rebecca Hogan.
Kilkenny looked to be gaining momentum, and although Lucy Langton appeared to have scored another try, it was disallowed for a knock-on at the turnover. Gorey sealed the match with a late try, ending the game on a disappointing note for Kilkenny.
Despite the loss, Kilkenny’s coaches were highly impressed with the team’s performance, particularly their work at the ruck and the number of turnovers won. They praised the support in both the tackles and rucks from all players, setting a high standard for the season. Saoirse Walsh was named Tackler of the Day for her relentless efforts, while Nessa Teehan earned Player of the Day for her leadership and key contributions throughout the match.
